The TV version of Snowpiercer is finally coming, with a launch planned for next spring.

The original cult classic movie starring Chris Evans came out in 2013, but this TV adaptation – which again centres on a gigantic, perpetually moving train after the world has become a frozen wasteland – is a reboot with Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connolly among the leads.

Benjamin Charles Watson, who recently starred as Dontae Evans in the third season of Designated Survivor, is one of the actors who features in the upcoming TV series.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he revealed that the TV adaptation will feel similar to the movie. It will be "a bit darker and grittier", but did add that because it will be shown on TBS in the US, some of the violence may be toned down slightly.

"It's pretty similar. It's just going to be a bit darker and grittier," he said.

"Working on that show was incredible. The set itself and the costumes are so incredible, and the fight choreography is absolutely amazing. A lot of people are going to be looking at this and they're going to be impressed.

"It felt really claustrophobic on set, with all the cameras and all the extras. You can tell it's such a different TV show, but compared to the movie, it's going to be pretty darn similar."

"The movie is violent, a little bit for television. It's TBS, so they can't make it that violent. But it's going to be a whirlwind. A lot of people are going to really enjoy it."

Watson added that the TV series will – like the original movie – touch on classism, saying that the themes are still incredibly relevant today.

"The whole basis is it actually represents real life realistically. It's individuals fighting for a better life," he said.

"Watching the struggle of what each character is going through and what they want in life, it mimics real life so that's why it's so fascinating working on it. People are trying to do what they need to do to survive.

"You'll have the rich and powerful at the front of the train eating phenomenal meals and have so much money that they can get away with anything. It's real life. It's the most fascinating thing to [be on the show], and I cannot wait for everyone to see it."
