Liverpool's famous stand, The Kop, takes its name from The battle of Spion Kop in the second boer war in South Africa. Many football grounds in the English Premier League and Football League, and several in the American, German, French, Hungarian, Japanese, Northern Irish and Scottish leagues, have one terrace or stand in their stadia named "Spion Kop" or "Kop" because of the steep nature of the terracing. The most known of them all is The Kop at Anfield in Liverpool. The chorus of the song could just as easily have been sung by the English soldiers who fought for the Spion Kop.
