NEW YORK — Though a deal has yet to be struck, Yankees managing partner Hal Steinbrenner met with general manager Brian Cashman at Yankee Stadium today, a sign that negotiations to keep Cashman in the Bronx may be wrapping up.
The parties are on track to complete negotiations this week, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, who requested anonymity because they are not allowed to speak publicly. Cashman's current contract expires on Oct. 31.
Even before the team's elimination against the Detroit Tigers in the American League Division Series, both the Yankees and Cashman made it clear publicly that both parties are interested in maintaining what has become a longstanding partnership.
Cashman, who has spent his entire baseball career with the Yankees, has been the team's general manager since 1998. He has maintained a strong relationship with Hal Steinbrenner.
The two men, who speak frequently, have turned their attention recently toward making progress on Cashman's contract extension.
