France and Japan agreed on Thursday to start formal talks on a reciprocal troop access deal, strengthening military cooperation amid rising maritime tensions in the region and the war in Ukraine, the Japanese government said. Paris has been pushing for more than a year to begin talks on a reciprocal access agreement (RAA). The government of the African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe will ask Portugal to repair the moral damages caused by colonialism, the country's education and cultural minister said on Thursday. Abreu said the issue was set to be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.
A Georgia business owner who bragged that he “fed” a police officer to a mob of rioters storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced on Thursday to nearly five years in prison for his repeated attacks on law enforcement during the insurrection. Jack Wade Whitton struck an officer with a metal crutch and dragged him — head first and face down — into the crowd on the Capitol's Lower West Terrace. Whitton later boasted in a text message that he “fed him to the people.”

A Pennsylvania nurse who administered lethal or potentially lethal doses of insulin to numerous patients pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and other charges Thursday and was sentenced to life in prison. Heather Pressdee, 41, was given three consecutive life sentences and another consecutive term of 380-760 years behind bars during a hearing in Butler, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Pittsburgh. Pressdee pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and 19 counts of attempted murder.
