Dollar Tree is selling Family Dollar to a pair of private equity firms for $1 billion after unsuccessfully trying to incorporate the bargain chain for a decade. Dollar Tree Inc. had been scouting options for Family Dollar for a while and it said Wednesday that the sale to Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management will allow it to focus on its core business. “This is a major milestone in our multi-year transformation journey to help us fully achieve our potential,” CEO Mike Creedon said in a prepared statement.
An appeals court in South Korea overturned an election law conviction against opposition leader Lee Jae-myung Wednesday, potentially clearing the way for him to mount a presidential campaign. The courtroom victory comes as the country's impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol could face an early exit due to his short-lived imposition of martial law and surveys show Lee, leader of the main liberal opposition Democratic Party who narrowly lost the 2022 election to Yoon, is the early favorite to replace him.
Balancing France's budget for the 2026 calendar year will be a tough challenge due to needing to both cut the deficit and make room for higher military spending, government spokeswoman Sophie Primas said on Wednesday. "The prime minister today insists that the 2026 budget, which is going to be a nightmare given the extent of our financial difficulties, be worked upon and consulted upon by the full social and parliamentary spectrum, many of whom often feel they are not listened to," she told Public Senat TV. Centrist Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's government wants to reduce the public sector budget deficit from 5.4% of economic output this year - one of the biggest fiscal shortfalls in the European Union - to the bloc's 3% ceiling in 2029.
Greenland and Denmark appeared cautiously relieved early Wednesday by the news that U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his wife are changing their itinerary for their visit to Greenland Friday, reducing the likelihood that they will cross paths with residents angered by the Trump administration’s attempts to annex the vast Arctic island, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. The couple will now visit the U.S. Space Force outpost at Pituffik, on the northwest coast of Greenland, instead of Usha Vance’s previously announced solo trip to the Avannaata Qimussersu dogsled race in Sisimiut. President Donald Trump irked much of Europe by suggesting that the United States should in some form control the self-governing, mineral-rich territory of Denmark, a U.S. ally and NATO member.
China will continue to invest more in new computer chipmaking equipment than any other geographical region in 2025, despite a significant year-over-year decline, industry group SEMI said in a report on Wednesday, followed by Taiwan and Korea. In its fabrication plant spending forecast, SEMI said global investments in gear will rise 2% this year to $110 billion, the sixth consecutive year in a row of growth, due to investment in tools needed to make chips for artificial intelligence.
Americans must prove U.S. citizenship to vote. Here is the news to know on Wednesday.

This is why the automotive experts at Edmunds have compiled five of the best used three-row SUVs that come without the eye-widening price tag. The National Institutes of Health will no longer be funding work on the health effects of climate change, according to internal records reviewed by ProPublica.
China protested Wednesday after the U.S. added dozens of companies to its export control list, including more than 50 based in China that it says sought advanced knowhow in supercomputing, artificial intelligence and quantum technology for military purposes. Companies from Taiwan, Iran, Pakistan, South Africa and United Arab Emirates also were included in the roughly 80 companies added to the “entity list” of the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security.
The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Moscow was continuing its intensive contacts with the U.S. and was pleased with how talks with Washington had gone so far after the United States said it had reached separate deals with Ukraine and Russia. The United States reached separate deals on Tuesday with Ukraine and Russia to cease fighting in the Black Sea and pause attacks against energy targets, with Washington agreeing to push to lift some sanctions against Moscow. "We are satisfied with how pragmatically and constructively our dialogue is developing and by how it is yielding results," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Russia on Wednesday condemned the arrest of the leader of Moldova's pro-Russian Gagauz ethnic minority, saying it was a blatant example of trying to use the methods of a police state to neutralise an opponent of President Maia Sandu. Police in Moldova detained Eugenia Gutul at Chisinau's international airport late on Tuesday, following the unexplained disappearance of two other wanted pro-Russian lawmakers. Gutul, the leader, or bashkan, of Gagauzia, was being held for 72 hours in the capital, said Angela Starinschi, an official with Moldova's Anti-Corruption Centre.
The Kremlin said on Wednesday that a number of conditions must be met before a Black Sea maritime security deal negotiated with the United States can be activated, pointing to an earlier agreement which it said saw Moscow's needs ignored. The United States reached separate deals on Tuesday with Ukraine and Russia to cease fighting in the Black Sea and pause attacks against energy targets, with Washington agreeing to push to lift some sanctions against Moscow. While Russian exports of food and fertiliser are not subject to Western sanctions, Moscow has said restrictions on payments, logistics and insurance have amounted to a barrier to shipments.
“It’s an incredibly daunting and stressful experience for many of them,” said Miklos Ringbauer, a certified public accountant based California. Planning ahead, doing your research and talking with experts can help first-time filers feel better about their taxes, Ringbauer said. The first step is to gather all the relevant documentation, said Eva Simpson, vice president of Member Value, Tax & Advisory Services for the American Institute of CPAs.
Niger’s junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, was on Wednesday sworn in as the country’s president for a transition period of five years under a new charter that replaces the West African nation’s constitution. The move effectively rebuffed attempts by the regional bloc to quicken the return to democracy after a 2023 coup. The five-year “flexible” transition period begins on Wednesday, according to Mahamane Roufai, the secretary general of the government.
Ukraine is ready to proceed with a ceasefire prohibiting attacks on energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, in line with a deal that was brokered by the United States during three days of negotiations with Ukrainian and Russian officials in the Saudi capital. Speaking in a video address late Tuesday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had agreed with U.S. negotiators “that a ceasefire for energy infrastructure can start today.”

Police were executing raids in six German states Wednesday against a group that authorities say “is part of an international network whose aim is to overthrow the government in Eritrea." Germany's federal prosecutor’s office is accusing 17 suspects of founding or being members of the German branch of Brigade N’Hamedu, which it defines as a terrorist organization. The German offshoot has been active since at least 2022 was involved in violence at events connected to the Eritrean government.
US President Donald Trump told Newsmax he believes Russia wants to end its war with Ukraine, but that Moscow could be “dragging their feet.”
As Spain choked on stubborn drought last year, a reservoir north of Barcelona emptied, revealing a medieval church. While it can be difficult to identify climate change as the cause of a single event, scientists say it is making such swings between dryness and downpour ever more extreme. Here's a look at the volatile weather that led Spain out of a drought. How unusual were the recent storms?
